New TRUMPF mobile operating table
Long past are the days when considerable strength and force had to be applied when moving and adjusting mobile operating tables. “It’s quite clear: Full motorization can considerably reduce the effort demanded of the surgical staff and today is standard in many high-end mobile operating tables,” sums up Michael Gräf, Product Manager Operating Tables at TRUMPF Medical Systems. “But then again, that pushes up the price at the same time. In an era of tight budgets, many hospitals are giving serious thought to what’s really and truly necessary. In some cases simpler tables will do – provided that they’re flexible and easy to use in day-to-day clinical service.”

Preoperative CT Useful for Younger Women
Acute appendicitis, commonly treated by surgical removal of the appendix, often can’t be easily diagnosed in the clinical setting. Consequently, there has historically been a high rate of negative appendectomy, with rates among young women being especially high. This is most likely due to gynecologic pathology, which can complicate accurate diagnosis. Now, with the use of preoperative computed tomography (CT), there is the potential to drastically reduce the rate of negative appendectomies.

Siemens launches Green+ Hospital Program
Sustainability essentially includes ecological, social, and economic factors. This also applies to healthcare and its service providers. For this reason, Siemens has introduced the “Green+ Hospitals” program. The “plus” in the name means that sustainability in healthcare does not simply equal ecology. In this industry it has far more to do with increasing workflow efficiency, improving the economic sustainability of healthcare companies, and simultaneously optimizing the quality of patient care, all while taking environmentallyrelevant aspects into account. For this reason, Green+ Hospitals brings together all solutions that help hospitals meet these three criteria. The program is being introduced to the public in detail for the first time at Arab Health 2010. The conference, which takes place each year in Dubai, is one of the world’s most important presentation platforms for medical engineering, health, pharmaceuticals, and dental technology.
